Qasr Azraq (Jordan)

Weather…

Qasr Azraq is an impressive fortress built from black basalt in eastern Jordan, with a long and storied history as a strategic outpost. The current structure largely dates back to the Ayyubids in 1237 AD, but the site was previously used by the Romans under Emperor Diocletian around 300 AD. The castle gained world fame in the early 20th century when T.E. Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, used it as his headquarters during the Arab Revolt of 1917-1918. The fortress is located near the Azraq oasis, the only permanent water source in this desert region, which ensured its military significance for centuries. A unique feature of the site is the massive basalt stone doors, which, despite their enormous weight, can still be moved on their hinges. Within the walls are the remains of a mosque, a prison, and the former living quarters for the garrison.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
The black basalt fortress is open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its massive stone chambers and courtyard. You can walk through the rooms where T.E. Lawrence once stayed, and climb to the rooftop for views.
🕒
Typical hours
The site typically opens from early morning until late afternoon, with shorter hours in winter. It is advisable to check with the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism for exact timings on the day of your visit.
📷
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the castle, both inside and outside. Use of flash is permitted but may be less effective in the dark basalt rooms; tripods are fine. The contrast of black stone and desert sky makes for striking images.
⏱️
Time needed
A thorough visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour, including climbing to the roof. Plan for 30-45 minutes inside, plus time to walk around the exterior and take photos. If you read the historical panels, allow up to 1.5 hours.
Combine with
Qasr Azraq is part of the Desert Castles loop, easily combined with Qasr Kharana and Qasr Amra. Many tours from Amman cover these three in a half-day excursion; consider visiting the nearby Azraq Wetland Reserve for a nature contrast.
🧭
Getting there
The castle is located near the town of Azraq, about 100 km east of Amman. It is accessible by car via the Desert Highway; taxis or organized tours are the best options without a vehicle.
💡
Insider tip
Bring a flashlight to explore the darker corners and cellars of the castle. Visit early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds; wear sturdy shoes as the stone floors are uneven and sandy.
