Qasr Kharana (Jordan)

Weather…

Qasr Kharana is one of Jordan's best-known and most well-preserved desert castles, located about 60 kilometers east of Amman. It was constructed in the early 8th century AD, with inscriptions in one of the upper rooms dating it to 710 AD. The building features a striking square shape with rounded corner towers and sides measuring approximately 35 meters. Despite its fortress-like appearance with narrow slits in the exterior walls, it was likely not a military facility, as the slits were intended for ventilation rather than defense. Historians suggest that Qasr Kharana served as a venue for diplomatic meetings between the Umayyad caliphs and local Bedouin leaders. The interior consists of two stories with a total of 60 rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The architecture combines Sassanid influences with local techniques and showcases early forms of Islamic decoration on the ceiling arches.
