Azraq Wetland Reserve is a unique desert oasis located in the eastern desert of Jordan near the town of Azraq. Once a vast system of mudflats and seasonal pools covering 12,000 square kilometers, the wetland was significantly reduced in size during the late 20th century due to excessive groundwater pumping for urban use. Established in 1978, the reserve now covers 12 square kilometers and represents a restored fragment of the original marshland that serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds traveling between Africa and Eurasia. Every year, thousands of birds, including various species of ducks, herons, and the rare desert finch, utilize the pools and reed beds for resting and breeding. The area is also of great historical importance, as the nearby Qasr Azraq fortress was used by the Romans and later by the Umayyads and T.E. Lawrence. Ongoing conservation projects focus on replenishing the water levels and managing the specialized flora that depends on the saline and freshwater springs of the basin.
