Quseir Amra (Jordan)

Weather…

Quseir Amra is an exceptionally well-preserved Umayyad desert castle located in eastern Jordan, built in the early 8th century between 723 and 743 AD by the Caliph Walid II. The site is most famous for its extensive and animated fresco paintings that cover the walls and ceilings of the reception hall and the bath complex, depicting scenes of hunting, bathing, and various royal figures. One of the most significant features is the celestial map painted on the dome of the calidarium, which is considered the earliest known representation of the zodiac on a curved surface. The structure was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 due to its unique artistic value and its role as a testament to the early Islamic period's secular architecture. Unlike many other desert castles, it functioned primarily as a royal retreat and hunting lodge rather than a military fortification. The building utilizes a sophisticated hypocaust heating system for its baths, reflecting Roman and Byzantine architectural influences adapted for Islamic use.
