Black Desert (Jordan)

Weather…

The Black Desert, also known as Harrat al-Sham, is a fascinating basalt landscape in eastern Jordan formed by prehistoric volcanic activity. Millions of black basalt stones cover the ground, giving the region its characteristic, almost otherworldly appearance. Geologically, it is part of a vast lava field that extends from Syria through Jordan and into Saudi Arabia, created by fissure eruptions millions of years ago. Despite the extreme heat and aridity, the region has a long history of human presence; numerous Safaitic inscriptions and mysterious stone structures known as 'desert kites' provide evidence of early nomadic life and hunting practices. The desert also hosts essential oases like Azraq, which serve as vital watering holes for migratory birds and local wildlife. Amidst this stark environment lie several of Jordan's Desert Castles, including Qasr Azraq, which once functioned as a military fortress. Navigating this region requires careful preparation due to the rugged terrain and intense environmental conditions.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this remote basalt expanse typically involves driving eastward from Amman along the Desert Highway toward Azraq. Exploring the volcanic fields requires specialized off-road vehicles and experienced drivers.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are the most favorable seasons, offering generally pleasant daytime temperatures. The height of summer brings punishing heat, while winter nights in the open desert drop to bitter freezing temperatures.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is harsh and notoriously unforgiving, consisting almost entirely of sharp black basalt rocks and dark gravel. There are virtually no clearly defined trails, meaning slow navigation across jagged stones.
🎒
What to bring
Exceptionally durable hiking boots with thick soles are an absolute necessity to prevent sharp volcanic rocks from piercing footwear. Extensive supplies of drinking water and heavy-duty sun protection are critical.
🅿️
Parking
There is virtually no official infrastructure or formal parking anywhere within the actual basalt fields. Vehicles are typically left safely at base camps near Azraq or parked carefully along remote desert tracks.
⚠️
Safety
Exploring without an experienced guide and redundant navigation devices is extremely dangerous due to the featureless landscape. The sharp rocks can easily shred typical tires, making vehicle breakdowns a major risk.
⏱️
Time needed
A basic exploration of the fringes usually takes a well-planned full day from a nearby base like Azraq. Deeper excursions targeting specific geological sites will require a rugged two or three-day expedition.
