Azraq Desert Agriculture (Jordan)

Weather…

Agriculture in the Azraq Desert of eastern Jordan is an extraordinary example of reclaiming arid lands, though it faces significant ecological challenges. In the midst of the basalt desert, extensive plantations of olives, grapes, and pomegranates have been established by tapping into the underground water reserves of the Azraq Basin. The region possesses fertile soils that yield high productivity when adequately irrigated. Geographically, Azraq sits at a historical crossroads of trade routes and was once famous for its vast wetlands, which are now threatened by intensive agricultural water extraction. Modern farms are increasingly adopting water-saving technologies to slow the depletion of the local aquifer. Produce from Azraq is known for its high quality and is supplied to both domestic markets and for export. Agriculture remains the primary employer for the local population, including Bedouin communities and refugees. Balancing agricultural output with the preservation of remaining water resources is the critical focus for the region's future development.
