Roccasecca is a town steeped in history located in the Sacco Valley, primarily famous as the birthplace of Saint Thomas Aquinas, one of the most influential philosophers and theologians of the Middle Ages. The town is spectacularly situated on the slopes of Mount Asprano and is dominated by the ruins of the Castle of the Counts of Aquino, where Thomas was born around 1225. This strategic position allowed for the control of transit routes between Rome and Naples throughout the centuries. Roccasecca was for a long time a site of conflict between various powers, including the Anjou and Aragonese dynasties. The historic center maintains a spiritual atmosphere with its medieval churches, such as San Tommaso and the Church of the Annunziata. During World War II, the town was heavily bombed due to its location along a vital railway line, yet it managed to preserve many of its historical treasures. Today, Roccasecca is a destination for pilgrims and culture enthusiasts eager to explore the legacy of the 'Doctor Angelicus.' The surrounding landscape also gives numerous hiking trails in the Apennine foothills.
