💡 Tips

  • Walk the Trieste Seafront (Lungomare Trieste) at sunset; it's one of the longest and most beautiful promenades in Italy.
  • The historic center's narrow streets (Centro Storico) are mostly pedestrianized, making it best explored on foot.
  • Instead of driving the Amalfi Coast, use the frequent ferries from Salerno's Concordia dock for cheaper, stress-free travel.
  • During winter (November to January), don't miss the 'Luci d'Artista', a spectacular city-wide light art installation.
  • In local coffee bars, you usually pay first at the cash register ('cassa') before ordering at the counter.

Salerno, situated on the gulf of the same name along the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a historically significant port city in the Campania region. During the Middle Ages, the city gained international fame for the Schola Medica Salernitana, the first medical school in Europe, active as early as the 9th century. In the 11th century, under Norman rule, Salerno served as the capital of their South Italian territories. A major landmark is the Salerno Cathedral (Duomo), consecrated in 1084, which houses the relics of Saint Matthew the Apostle. Overlooking the city is the Arechi Castle, a Lombard fortress that provided strategic defense for centuries. In 1943, Salerno played a pivotal role during World War II as the site of the Allied landings known as Operation Avalanche and briefly served as the seat of the Italian government. Today, it remains a major maritime hub and the gateway to the renowned Amalfi Coast.
