💡 Tips

  • Visit the Montecassino Abbey early in the morning to enjoy the atmosphere before the tour buses arrive. Modest dress is strictly required for entry.
  • The town of Cassino was completely rebuilt after World War II, so do not expect a historic medieval center; the main sights are on the surrounding hills.
  • Take time to visit the Commonwealth, Polish, and German war cemeteries. They are deeply moving and beautifully maintained.
  • A car is very helpful here, as the Abbey and the various war memorials are spread out along the mountain roads.
  • The area is rich in thermal water; plan a relaxing stroll in the Terme Varroniane park to see the natural springs.

Cassino is a historically pivotal city located at the foot of Monte Cassino in the province of Frosinone. The town gained worldwide recognition due to the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, one of the most intense conflicts of World War II, which resulted in the near-total destruction of both the city and the famous Benedictine Abbey. The Abbey of Monte Cassino, founded in 529 AD by Saint Benedict of Nursia, was meticulously rebuilt after the war and is revered as the cradle of Western monasticism. Cassino also possesses deep ancient roots as the Volscian and later Roman settlement of Casinum, evidenced by the well-preserved Roman theater and amphitheater in the local archaeological park. Following its post-war reconstruction, the city evolved into a modern economic hub, largely driven by the presence of a major Stellantis (formerly Fiat) automotive plant. In addition to the abbey's religious significance, Cassino is now a prominent university center. War memorials, such as the Polish Military Cemetery, stand as solemn reminders of the city's sacrificial wartime history.
