Highlights of 2026

Pontecorvo is an intriguing city in the Liri Valley, distinguished by its unique historical role as an exclave of the Papal States within the Kingdom of Naples. This special status persisted from the 11th century until the unification of Italy in 1860, significantly shaping the city's political and cultural identity. Its name is derived from an ancient bridge over the Liri River, the 'Pons Curvus' (curved bridge), which was vital for regional trade. During the Napoleonic era, Pontecorvo was briefly elevated to a sovereign principality, with the title conferred upon Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, the future King of Sweden. The city was nearly completely destroyed during World War II due to its strategic position along the Gustav Line, resulting in the loss of much of its medieval heritage. Post-war reconstruction has turned Pontecorvo into a modern hub, yet it remains proud of its local traditions, including its famous carnival and the cultivation of the unique red Pontecorvo bell pepper (DOP).
