Torre del Greco is situated on the Gulf of Naples at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, famously known as the world capital of coral and cameo craftsmanship. The city's history is characterized by its dramatic relationship with the volcano, having been partially or completely destroyed by lava flows multiple times over the centuries. Significant eruptions in 1631, 1794, and 1861 forced the population to rebuild each time directly upon the cooled lava, leading to the local motto 'Post fata resurgo' (After the fates I rise again). The tradition of coral working began in the 17th century and elevated the city to international prominence, eventually resulting in the establishment of a specialized art school in 1878. Beyond its crafts, Torre del Greco is home to several historic estates along the 'Miglio d'Oro' (Golden Mile), including Villa delle Ginestre, where the renowned poet Giacomo Leopardi wrote some of his final works. The modern economy is driven by its maritime port, tourism related to Vesuvius, and its world-class jewelry industry.
