Benevento is a historic city in the Campania region of southern Italy, strategically located at the confluence of the Calore and Sabato rivers. Originally an ancient Samnite settlement known as Maleventum, it was renamed Beneventum by the Romans following their victory over Pyrrhus in 275 BC. The city's most significant Roman monument is the Arch of Trajan, built in 114 AD, which features remarkably preserved reliefs depicting the emperor's life and achievements. During the Middle Ages, Benevento rose to prominence as the capital of a powerful Lombard Duchy, serving as a bastion of Lombard culture for several centuries. The Church of Santa Sofia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases unique architectural features from the Lombard era with its star-shaped ground plan. Another major landmark is the Roman Theater, constructed under Emperor Hadrian, which originally seated 10,000 spectators and is still used for performances today. Benevento is also shrouded in the folklore of witches, a legend stemming from ancient rituals that eventually inspired the world-famous Strega liqueur produced in the city. Today, it remains a lively provincial capital, blending its deep historical layers with modern educational and economic activities.
