Fontana Liri is a characteristic town in the province of Frosinone, picturesquely stretching along the Liri River and divided into two main sections: Fontana Liri Inferiore and the hilltop Fontana Liri Superiore. The town gained worldwide fame as the birthplace of the legendary Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni, who was born here in 1924. In addition to its cinematic connection, Fontana Liri is historically significant for its 'Regio Polverificio,' a royal powder factory established in the 19th century that shaped the local economy for decades. A geological feature is Lake Solfatara, a small sulfur lake whose therapeutic waters have been known since antiquity. The architecture of the upper town is medieval in character, while the lower part features more modern structures and industrial heritage. The Church of Santo Stefano Protomartire is one of the town's most important religious buildings. Fontana Liri is also known for its natural surroundings with lush vegetation and the watercourses of the Liri River, which gave the town its name. Today, the town is a quiet cultural center that preserves the legacy of Mastroianni and its industrial history.
