Sora is a historic town situated on the banks of the Liri River in the province of Frosinone, at the foot of Mount San Casto. The settlement has Volscian origins and was a contested territory between Volscians, Samnites, and Romans in antiquity. Perched above the town are the ruins of the Castle of San Casto, a medieval fortress providing extensive views over the Liri Valley. Sora is renowned as the birthplace of notable figures, including the film director Vittorio De Sica and Cardinal Cesare Baronio. The cityscape is defined by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, erected on the remains of a Roman temple, and numerous elegant aristocratic palaces. The Liri River, which flows through the town center, provides a unique atmosphere and was historically vital for industrial growth, particularly in paper manufacturing. Despite suffering from severe earthquakes in the past, the town has preserved many of its historic monuments and serves as a major commercial and cultural hub in the Ciociaria region.
