Cadore Eyewear Cluster (Italy)

Weather…

The eyewear district of Cadore in the Belluno province is the world's most significant center for the design and manufacture of high-quality eyewear. The history of this industrial cluster began in 1878 with the opening of the first eyewear factory by Lorenzo Fedon in Calalzo di Cadore. Throughout the 20th century, the region transformed from a poor mountainous area into a cutting-edge industrial hub, where global market leaders like Luxottica originated. Luxottica was founded in 1961 in Agordo and is now the largest eyewear manufacturer in the world. The district is characterized by vertical integration, ranging from design and material research to specialized manufacturing. More than 900 companies employ thousands of professionals and produce approximately 80 percent of the world's luxury eyewear. The geographic isolation in the Dolomites encouraged strong internal cooperation and specialized artisanal expertise.
