The history of this industrial cluster began in 1878 with the opening of the first eyewear factory by Lorenzo Fedon in Calalzo di Cadore. Throughout the 20th century, the region transformed from a poor mountainous area into a cutting-edge industrial hub, where global market leaders like Luxottica originated. Luxottica was founded in 1961 in Agordo and is now the largest eyewear manufacturer in the world. The district is characterized by vertical integration, ranging from design and material research to specialized manufacturing. More than 900 companies employ thousands of professionals and produce approximately 80 percent of the world's luxury eyewear. The geographic isolation in the Dolomites encouraged strong internal cooperation and specialized artisanal expertise.

Visiting
The cluster consists of many small and medium factories that are not open to the public. Visitors can only see the industrial buildings from the outside, usually from the main roads passing through the valley.
Where to view it
A good viewpoint is from the SS51 road which runs through the Cadore region. Many factory signs and showrooms can be spotted along the route between Pieve di Cadore and Cortina.

The main products are high-end eyeglass frames and sunglasses made from acetate, metal or carbon fiber. Some factory outlets sell direct to the public, offering surplus or discontinued models.
