Ancona, the capital of the Marche region, is uniquely situated on an elbow-shaped promontory along the Adriatic coast. Founded around 387 BC by Greek settlers from Syracuse, its name derives from the Greek word 'Ankon', meaning elbow. As a vital maritime gateway, Ancona flourished under Emperor Trajan, who expanded the port in the 2nd century AD, an achievement marked by the well-preserved Arch of Trajan. During the Middle Ages, the city operated as an independent maritime republic, competing with Venice and maintaining strong ties with the Byzantine Empire. Overlooking the harbor from Guasco Hill is the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, an 11th-century masterpiece blending Romanesque and Byzantine architecture. A rare geographical feature of Ancona is that, due to its position on the promontory, both sunrise and sunset can be viewed over the sea. Today, Ancona remains one of Italy's primary ferry ports, linking the country to Greece and Croatia.
