Parma Cathedral, officially the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, stands as a premier example of Romanesque architecture in Italy. Construction began in the 11th century, and the building was consecrated in 1106 by Pope Paschal II. The interior is world-renowned for Antonio da Correggio's illusionistic dome fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin, painted between 1526 and 1530. This masterpiece broke traditional spatial boundaries and significantly influenced the development of Baroque art. The cathedral also houses Benedetto Antelami's Deposition from the Cross, a pivotal relief sculpture dated 1178. Its facade is characterized by multiple tiers of galleries and a grand portal flanked by stone lions. Along with the neighboring Baptistery, the cathedral forms an architectural complex that defines the religious center of Parma on the Piazza Duomo.
