Mestre is the mainland portion of the municipality of Venice, serving as the modern, economic, and industrial engine of the Venetian Lagoon. While historic Venice is centered on tourism and preservation, Mestre provides the essential residential and commercial infrastructure for the Veneto region. The city's history dates back to the Middle Ages when it was a fortified port and gateway, eventually coming under the control of the Republic of Venice in 1337. One of its few remaining historical landmarks is the Torre dell'Orologio, a 12th-century clock tower that once formed part of the town's defensive walls. The central hub, Piazza Ferretto, has undergone extensive renovation to become a spirited pedestrian zone filled with shops, cafes, and historical architecture. Mestre is linked to the island city of Venice by the Ponte della Libertà, making it a crucial transportation hub for trains and vehicles entering the lagoon. Nearby, the industrial port area of Marghera has played a significant role in Italy's 20th-century economic development. The city also features extensive green spaces like San Giuliano Park, which provides panoramic views of the water and Venice's skyline. Today, Mestre is home to the vast majority of Venice's residents, representing the practical center of local daily life.
