Cesena, located in the heart of the Romagna region, is a historic city that reached its zenith under the rule of the Malatesta family during the 14th and 15th centuries. Its most prestigious cultural asset is the Malatestiana Library, completed in 1452, which is recognized as the first public library in the world and part of the UNESCO Memory of the World register. The library remains remarkably preserved in its original state, including its collection of medieval manuscripts. Overlooking the city is the Rocca Malatestiana, one of the region's best-preserved fortresses, surrounded by a large public park. Situated at the foot of the Apennines and bisected by the Savio River, Cesena is today a major agricultural and food processing hub. It is also the global headquarters of the fitness company Technogym. The city is nicknamed the 'City of the Three Popes' because three Catholic pontiffs were either born here or served as its bishop.
