Mole Vanvitelliana (Italy)

Weather…

The Mole Vanvitelliana is a pentagonal fortress built on an artificial island in the port of Ancona. Designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and constructed between 1732 and 1743, it originally served as a quarantine hospital for sailors. Measuring 300 meters in length and 200 meters in width, it features five bastions and was built with 40,000 cubic meters of stone. In the 19th century it was used as a military prison and later as a gunpowder depot. During World War II it sustained bomb damage and was restored in the 1960s. Today it functions as a cultural centre hosting exhibitions, conferences, and the International Architecture Biennale. The structure is a listed monument since 1997. Historically, it also imprisoned Hungarian revolutionaries in 1849. Its pentagonal shape was a strategic design for defence.
