Sestriere sits on a sunny pass between the Chisone and Susa valleys in the Piedmontese Alps, very close to the French border. It is one of the world's first purpose-built ski resorts, envisioned in the early 1930s by FIAT founder Giovanni Agnelli. The town's skyline is dominated by its iconic cylindrical towers, which were originally designed as retreat housing for FIAT factory workers. Today, Sestriere is the hub of the vast 'Via Lattea' (Milky Way) ski area, providing over 400 kilometers of interconnected slopes that stretch across to France. The resort achieved global fame during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, hosting the majority of the alpine skiing events. Beyond the winter season, Sestriere is a premier high-altitude summer destination, boasting Europe's highest 18-hole golf course and world-class mountain biking trails.
