Fenestrelle Fortress (Italy)

Weather…

The Fenestrelle Fortress, often referred to as the 'Great Wall of the Alps,' is the largest alpine fortification in Europe, located in the Chisone Valley of the Piedmont region. Construction of this monumental complex began in 1728 under the orders of King Victor Amadeus II of Savoy and spanned 122 years, reaching completion in 1850. The fortress covers a vast area of 1.3 million square meters and rises across a vertical drop of approximately 600 meters. It comprises three main forts, several redoubts, and batteries, all interconnected by a unique covered staircase known as the Scala Reale, which features nearly 4,000 steps. Originally designed to defend the border against French incursions, it later served as a state prison and a military barracks. Today, the fortress stands as a remarkable example of military engineering and a symbol of the Piedmont region, offering guided tours that detail its strategic history and the rigorous architectural challenges of its construction.
