Mount Arbel (Israel)

Weather…

Mount Arbel rises dramatically above the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, providing one of Israel's most spectacular panoramic views. At an elevation of 181 meters above sea level, its summit is not exceptionally high, but because the lake lies far below sea level, the vertical cliff face towers nearly 400 meters above the water. Arbel is a national park and nature reserve famous for its striking cliffs composed of Eocene limestone. The cliff walls contain numerous caves that historically served as fortresses and hideouts, notably during the Jewish revolt against Herod the Great in 38 BCE. An impressive fortress ruin, Qal'at Ibn Ma'an, is built directly into the cliffs. Hikers enjoy the challenging descent along the cliffside using iron cables and ladders, which provides direct access to ancient cave dwellings. The flora features rare species such as the Arbel snapdragon, and the cliffs offer nesting sites for birds of prey. The combination of wide-open geology, ancient history, and proximity to biblical Magdala makes Arbel a unique and compelling destination.
