Agamon Hula (Israel)

Weather…

Agamon Hula is a premier nature reserve located in the Hula Valley of northern Israel, recognized as one of the most significant bird migration flyways in the world. Twice a year, approximately 500 million birds pass through this corridor on their journey between Europe, Asia, and Africa, with tens of thousands of common cranes choosing to overwinter here. The park was established in the 1990s as part of an ecological restoration project following the drainage of the original Hula Lake and marshes in the 1950s. Today, the reflooded area features a shallow lake and lush wetlands that provide a vital habitat for hundreds of species of birds, mammals, and aquatic life. Visitors can explore the well-maintained trails on foot, by bicycle, or in specialized hidden 'bird-watching wagons' that allow for close-up viewing without disturbing the animals. Managed by Keren Kayemet LeIsrael (KKL-JNF), Agamon Hula is a masterpiece of environmental management that balances agriculture, tourism, and nature conservation.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The absolute best times to visit are during the spring and autumn migration seasons, when tens of thousands of pelicans, cranes, and storks stop over at the lake to rest and feed on their long journeys.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is exceptionally spectacular as massive flocks of birds take to the sky all at once. The late afternoon is also wonderful for observing large groups returning to the wetlands to roost for the night.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors must strictly follow the designated walking, cycling, or motorized cart routes around the lake to prevent disturbing the resting birds. Drones are entirely forbidden, and loud noises should be kept to a minimum.
🎒
What to bring
High-magnification binoculars or a spotting scope are essentially mandatory to fully appreciate the sheer scale and variety of the birdlife. Consider renting a bicycle or golf cart locally to cover the vast perimeter of the lake easily.
🧭
Getting there
The site is highly accessible, featuring paved paths, clear signposting, and a large visitor center. It is conveniently located just off the main highway running through the Hula Valley, offering ample organized parking spaces.
🦌
What to expect
While the sheer number of birds practically guarantees sightings during migration, patience is required to spot rarer species hiding among the reeds. Take your time at the observation hides and let the incredible natural spectacle unfold.
