Tiberias was founded around 20 CE by Herod Antipas on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee and named after the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Following the destruction of Jerusalem, the city emerged as a preeminent center of Jewish scholarship, where the Mishnah and the Jerusalem Talmud were largely compiled. It remains one of the four holy cities of Judaism, home to the venerated tombs of Maimonides and Rabbi Akiva. Geographically unique, the city sits approximately 200 meters below sea level, resulting in a distinct subtropical climate and famous geothermal springs known since antiquity as Hammat Tiberias. Modern Tiberias serves as a major tourist hub, blending archaeological remains from the Crusader and Ottoman periods with bustling waterfront activities. The city's economy is heavily driven by international tourism, catering to both religious pilgrims and leisure travelers seeking the natural beauty of the Galilee region. Its strategic location and historical depth make it a focal point for understanding the cultural evolution of the Levant over two millennia.
