Sea of Galilee (Israel)

Weather…

The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Ghenezaret or Lake Kinneret, is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth, situated between 210 and 215 meters below sea level. With a surface area of approximately 166 square kilometers, it is Israel's primary freshwater reservoir, fed by the Jordan River flowing in from the north and exiting in the south. Geologically, the lake is part of the Great Rift Valley, formed by tectonic activity millions of years ago. In ancient times, the region was densely populated and served as a major center for fishing, playing a central role in numerous biblical accounts. Historic sites such as Capernaum and Tiberias line its shores, testifying to thousands of years of human settlement and cultural heritage. The water level of the lake is regarded as a national indicator of the ecological health of the country and is strictly monitored by authorities. Today, the lake supports not only water supply but also bustling tourism, agriculture, and fishing industries in the fertile Galilee region. Despite the rise of modern desalination plants, the Kinneret remains a strategic and emotional cornerstone of Israel's water management.
