The Dukan Dam is a prominent concrete arch dam located on the Lesser Zab River in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of the Kurdistan Region. Constructed between 1954 and 1959, it was one of the first major infrastructure projects of modern Iraq. The design was produced by the British firm Binnie & Partners, with construction carried out by a French company. The dam's primary objectives are to provide irrigation for the fertile Ranya Plain, generate hydroelectric power, and ensure flood control for downstream areas. Lake Dukan, created by the dam, is the largest body of water in the Kurdistan Region and has evolved into a vital hub for tourism and the fishing industry. The dam's power station contributes significantly to the regional energy supply, having undergone several technological upgrades over the decades. Architecturally, the dam is noted for its elegant arch design that fits precisely within a narrow mountain gorge. Geologically, the site is far more stable than the Mosul Dam, making Dukan a reliable cornerstone of Iraq's water management system. During periods of high water levels, the dam's unique bell-mouth spillway provides a spectacular sight as it manages excess flow.
