Azadi Park (Iraq)

Weather…

Azadi Park is located in the center of Sulaymaniyah, having been established in the early 1990s. The site previously served as the headquarters for the military garrison of the Iraqi armed forces, which was utilized until 1991. Spanning 12 hectares, the park currently stands as the largest urban green zone in the metropolis. The paved pedestrian path network has a total length of five kilometers and is flanked by dense stands of trees that were planted in the first years after opening. The northern section of the park features an artificial lake covering 4,000 square meters, which is supplied by groundwater pumps. The park also contains a monument dedicated to the victims of the 1988 Anfal operation. Every March, the area serves as a central venue for Newroz festivities, traditionally gathering up to 50,000 local residents to celebrate.
