Qara Dagh Nature Reserve (Iraq)

Weather…

The Qara Dagh Nature Reserve is located south of the city of Sulaymaniyah and encompasses a 22,000-hectare forested mountain massif. The region is characterized by rugged terrain, with its highest peak reaching 1,890 meters. The area gained international scientific attention in 2011 when a camera trap study conducted by the Nature Iraq organization provided the first photographic evidence of the survival of the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus tulliana) in Iraq. Alongside this critically endangered big cat, the reserve is home to the Syrian brown bear, wolves, and over 80 documented bird species. Deciduous oak forests make up more than 70 percent of the vegetation. To curb poaching and illegal logging, specialized forest ranger units have been patrolling the most sensitive core zones, which account for about 5,000 hectares of the total area, since 2014.
