Lake Dukan (Iraq)

Weather…

Lake Dukan is a large reservoir in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan and was created by the construction of the Dukan Dam on the Little Zab river between 1954 and 1959. It is one of the most photogenic lakes in the country and is surrounded by the impressive mountains of the Zagros range. With a surface area of around 270 square kilometers, the lake primarily serves for the irrigation of the surrounding fertile plains and for the generation of hydroelectric power through a powerful plant. In addition to its economic importance, Lake Dukan has developed into an important recreational area and tourism center. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, or exploring the numerous small islands that emerge from the blue water at medium water levels. The region is known for its cool breezes and clean mountain air, making it a great getaway from the hot cities. The Dukan Dam itself is considered a masterpiece of mid-20th-century engineering in the Middle East.
