Halgurd (Iraq)

Weather…

Halgurd is one of the highest peaks in Iraq, situated in the Zagros Mountains within the Erbil Governorate, near the border with Iran. It reaches an impressive height of 3,607 meters above sea level and was long regarded as the highest mountain in the country before newer measurements identified the nearby Cheekha Dar as being slightly taller. The mountain is part of the Halgurd-Sakran mountain range and is characterized by its rugged rock formations and deep valleys. During the winter months, the summit is thickly covered with snow, making it a challenge for mountaineers and hikers. The region surrounding Halgurd is known for its exceptional biodiversity, housing rare animal species such as the Persian leopard and various birds of prey. Ecotourism is increasingly gaining importance in this area as more adventurers seek to discover the untouched wilderness of Kurdistan. The ascent provides dramatic panoramic views over the surrounding mountain ranges and the green highlands of northern Iraq.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reachable primarily via the Choman district in the Erbil Governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan; expeditions typically establish their starting point in one of the nearby mountain villages before ascending.
📅
Best season
The optimal window for visiting is from late spring to early autumn, generally between May and September, as harsh winters bring heavy snow accumulation and extremely freezing conditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect a highly challenging alpine environment characterized by steep ascents, loose rocky trails, and exposed ridges that demand excellent physical fitness and high altitude endurance.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, broken-in mountaineering boots, layered thermal clothing for unpredictable weather, reliable GPS navigation, and fully self-sufficient water supplies are absolutely essential for this trek.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors usually leave their vehicles at secured spots in the town of Choman or at the very edge of the unpaved trailhead settlements, as higher access routes become entirely impassable for cars.
⚠️
Safety
Altitude sickness poses a genuine risk on this high peak; it is strongly advised to always travel with an experienced local guide due to the remote, rugged terrain and lack of immediate rescue services.
⏱️
