St. Gabriel Cathedral (Mauritius)

Weather…

St. Gabriel Cathedral is the spiritual heart of Rodrigues Island and a monumental testament to the faith and labor of its people. Constructed between 1936 and 1939 under the guidance of Father Gabriel Gontier, the cathedral was built almost entirely by the hands of the local community. Residents carried hand-carved volcanic stones and coral limestone from distant quarries to the site, creating what was then the largest church in the Indian Ocean. Its sturdy, thick walls were designed to withstand the fierce tropical cyclones that occasionally sweep across the island. The architecture is characterized by its imposing simplicity and grand proportions, dominating the village of St. Gabriel. Inside, the vast nave and rows of wooden pews create a serene atmosphere for prayer. On Sundays, the cathedral comes alive as hundreds of Rodriguans attend mass in their finest attire, making it not just a historical landmark, but a bustling center of social and spiritual life on the island.
