Ile aux Cocos
Ile aux Cocos is a paradisiacal sandbank island located about 4 kilometers west of Rodrigues within its vast lagoon. Stretching approximately 1.5 kilometers, this island is a strictly protected nature reserve and a vital sanctuary for thousands of seabirds, including the rare fairy tern and various species of noddies. A visit here feels like stepping back into a pristine world where nature remains undisturbed. The island is encircled by incredibly clear, shallow waters and the finest white coral sand. Because access is highly regulated, Ile aux Cocos is a place of absolute tranquility. Visitors can walk along designated paths to observe birds nesting fearlessly in the trees. Snorkeling in the surrounding reef is another highlight, often revealing rays and colorful schools of fish in the crystal-clear lagoon. The crossing from Rodrigues takes about 90 minutes by traditional pirogue, and the journey through the multi-hued turquoise waters is an experience in itself. As there are no permanent buildings or shops on the island, tour operators typically provide a picnic lunch to be enjoyed on the beach. The best time to visit is between May and October to avoid the peak heat. Ile aux Cocos is a must-see for every nature and bird enthusiast.
