Heimaey (Iceland)

Weather…

Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, located off the south coast of Iceland. Covering approximately 13.4 square kilometers, it is a vital hub for the nation's fishing industry. The island gained international fame due to the eruption of the Eldfell volcano in 1973, which began unexpectedly on January 23rd. The evacuation of nearly 5,000 residents was carried out in a few hours using fishing boats, a feat of logistics and community effort. Lava flows destroyed about 400 buildings and threatened to close the harbor, which was only saved by a massive operation to cool the advancing lava with seawater. Today, Heimaey is a key site for geological research and birdwatching, as its cliffs host one of the world's largest Atlantic puffin colonies during the summer breeding season.
