Heimaey Puffin Colony (Iceland)

Weather…

Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago (Westman Islands) off the south coast of Iceland. The island gained international fame in 1973 following the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Eldfell, which destroyed much of the town and led to the total evacuation of its residents. Biologically, Heimaey is of immense significance as it hosts the world's largest colony of Atlantic puffins. Every late summer, a local tradition known as the 'Puffin Patrol' occurs, where children rescue confused fledglings attracted by town lights and release them safely into the ocean. The island is rimmed by dramatic sea cliffs that provide good nesting sites for various seabird species. Its economy remains deeply rooted in the fishing industry, supported by a growing tourism sector focused on the island's volcanic heritage and wildlife. The harbor of Heimaey is one of Iceland's most important, now even better protected from Atlantic storms by the lava flows created during the 1973 eruption.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Heimaey hosts the world's largest puffin colony, and the best time is from May to August when the birds breed. In August, locals rescue young puffins, a unique spectacle.
🌅
Best time of day
The birds are most active in the evening, returning with food to their burrows. Early morning is also good, but the colony is often quieter as many birds are out at sea.
📜
Etiquette
Please do not go near the burrows as the puffins are raising their chicks there. No flash photography and no loud noises; the birds are sensitive to disturbance.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are sufficient to view puffins up close; many birds are very tame. Comfortable hiking shoes and a windproof jacket are recommended as the weather is changeable.
🧭
Getting there
Heimaey is reachable by ferry from Landeyjahöfn; the crossing takes about 30 minutes. Alternatively, there are flights from Reykjavík to Vestmannaeyjar. From the dock, the colonies are within walking distance.
🦌
What to expect
Puffins are numerous but come and go in waves. Sit in a quiet spot and wait; often the birds fly quite close to you, especially at dusk.
