Oddi (Iceland)

Weather…

Oddi in Rangárvellir was one of the most significant cultural and political centers in medieval Iceland. It served as the seat of the Oddaverjar clan, who played a central role in the country's governance during the 12th and 13th centuries. The site is most famously associated with Sæmundur Sigfússon the Learned (1056-1133), a priest and scholar who is said to have studied in France and was credited with great wisdom and even magical powers in folklore. Oddi was a renowned center of learning where Snorri Sturluson, Iceland's greatest historian and author of the Prose Edda, was fostered and educated by Jón Loftsson. The farm’s influence waned after the fall of the Icelandic Commonwealth, but it remains a site of immense historical pride. Archaeological surveys continue to explore the complex of man-made tunnels and structures that hint at the site's past scale and sophistication.
