Velemér / Őrség - Szalafő (Hungary)

Weather…

This area in the southwestern tip of Hungary is a living time capsule. Velemér is world-renowned for its small 13th-century Romanesque church, whose frescoes by Johannes Aquila were designed so that incoming sunlight illuminates specific biblical scenes on certain feast days, hence the name 'Church of Light.' Just a few kilometers away lies Szalafő with the Pityerszer district, the best-preserved example of the traditional 'szeres' settlement form. Here, typical wooden houses stand in their original environment, protected today as an open-air museum. The Őrség region is also a paradise for ecotourism, known for its pumpkin seed oil, handmade pottery, and untouched forests. A visit is especially worthwhile in autumn during pumpkin season. Access requires a car but provides a drive through one of Hungary's most idyllic landscapes.
