Őrbottyán is a town in Pest County, established in 1970 through the merger of two formerly independent villages, Őrszentmiklós and Vácbottyán, situated in the northwestern foothills of the Gödöllő Mountains. The town is nationally and internationally renowned for its unique bell-foundry heritage, being home to the Gombos family's workshop, one of the last places in Hungary where this ancient craft is still practiced with masterly skill. Bells cast in Őrbottyán can be heard ringing in church towers across the globe, serving as a testament to the town's exceptional craftsmanship. Geographically, the area is characterized by rolling hills and pristine air, with nearby lakes and forests providing ample space for hiking, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The town's layout still preserves the historic atmosphere of its two founding settlements, marked by distinct Catholic and Reformed churches and traditional vernacular architecture. As part of the expanding Budapest metropolitan area, Őrbottyán has grown into a popular suburban choice, yet it remains committed to preserving its identity through its Bell Museum and various community initiatives that focus on cultural heritage and the protection of the local natural environment.
