Visegrád (Hungary)

Weather…

Visegrád is a historic town positioned in the Danube Bend, about 40 kilometers north of Budapest, which served as the capital and royal seat of Hungary during the Middle Ages. The town’s most iconic feature is the Citadel (Upper Castle), built in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion on a steep cliff overlooking the Danube. It has one of the most wide-open panoramic views of the river's winding curve. At the base of the hill lies the Royal Palace, commissioned by the Anjou kings in the 14th century and later expanded into a grand Renaissance residence under King Matthias Corvinus. The palace lay buried and forgotten for centuries after the Ottoman wars until its rediscovery and partial reconstruction in the 20th century. Visegrád was also the site of the famous Royal Congress of 1335, providing the historical foundation for the modern Visegrád Group (V4) alliance. Today, it is a key cultural and hiking destination, blending medieval grandeur with remarkable natural scenery. Visegrád remained a leading day-trip destination in the Danube Bend in 2024-2025, with visitor numbers at the citadel and royal palace rising as domestic tourism around Budapest strengthened.
