Karcag Windmill (Hungary)

Weather…

The Karcag Windmill is an outstanding industrial monument located in the heart of the Great Hungarian Plain, symbolizing the region's rich agricultural heritage. Built in 1858 by Mihály Gál, the structure was crafted from stone and brick, making it significantly more durable than the typical adobe windmills of the era. It is the sole survivor of several windmills that once dotted the landscape around Karcag, serving as a testament to 19th-century engineering. The windmill features four stories and a rotating cap, which allowed the miller to align the sails with the prevailing wind direction. Inside, visitors can examine the well-preserved original machinery, including the massive grinding stones and wooden transmission gears. Following a meticulous restoration in the late 20th century, the windmill was converted into a museum, showcasing the daily life and technical skills of traditional millers. Standing on a man-made mound, it remains one of the most photographed historical sites in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County.
