The colony was founded through the initiative of prominent artists like Lajos Deák-Ébner and Adolf Fényes, who were drawn to the unique light conditions and rural life of the Great Hungarian Plain. Szolnok quickly became a hub for 'en plein air' painting, and the works produced here were instrumental in defining Hungarian realism and impressionism in the 20th century.
