Zagyva River (Hungary)

Weather…

The Zagyva is a major right-bank tributary of the Tisza, merging with the main river at the city of Szolnok. With a total length of approximately 179 kilometers, it originates in the Karancs mountains near the Slovak border and flows southward through the Great Hungarian Plain. The section at Szolnok is historically significant, as the confluence of the Zagyva and Tisza dictated the strategic location of the medieval Szolnok Castle. The river has a very low gradient, which historically led to frequent and devastating floods before extensive regulation works were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Szolnok, the river shapes the urban layout and provides green spaces for recreation, such as the Zagyva banks. Ecologically, the river is vital for fish populations and serves as a corridor for migratory aquatic species. The Zagyva's water flow depends heavily on rainfall in the northern hills, leading to significant seasonal fluctuations. Today, the estuary area is a popular destination for anglers and water sports enthusiasts in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County.
