The Zagyva is a major right-bank tributary of the Tisza, merging with the main river at the city of Szolnok. With a total length of approximately 179 kilometers, it originates in the Karancs mountains near the Slovak border and flows southward through the Great Hungarian Plain. The section at Szolnok is historically significant, as the confluence of the Zagyva and Tisza dictated the strategic location of the medieval Szolnok Castle. The river has a very low gradient, which historically led to frequent and devastating floods before extensive regulation works were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries. Getting there
The Zagyva flows directly into the Tisza within the city limits of Szolnok and is very easily accessible there via well-built pedestrian bridges and inner-city streets, making it barrier-free for visitors of all age groups.
Best season
The riverbank areas in Szolnok are most attractive from spring through early autumn, when the trees provide pleasant shade and people regularly use the recreation areas near the confluence for relaxing walks in the fresh air.
Terrain & paths
In the confluence area, the terrain is completely flat and generally defined by urban landscaping. There are paved pathways, well-manicured lawns, and tree-lined promenades that are exceptionally easy to navigate on foot.
What to bring
Normal casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes are perfectly sufficient for a simple visit to the urban stretch of the Zagyva. Special outdoor equipment is entirely unnecessary here unless you are planning long cycle tours.

Szolnok has ample public parking in the city center and near the confluence promenade, from where the rivers can be comfortably reached within a few minutes' walk. Parking fees should frequently be taken into consideration.
Safety
The urban environment surrounding the Zagyva in Szolnok is very safe and highly developed for pedestrians. By the water, however, one should watch out for unsecured bank edges, particularly when strolling around with smaller children.
