Hortobagy River (Hungary)

Weather…

The Hortobágy River is the life-giving artery of the world-famous Hungarian Puszta. It originates in the Nyírség area and meanders with an extremely low flow velocity through the heart of the Hortobágy National Park. The river is inseparably linked with the image of the Puszta, especially through the iconic Nine-arched Bridge that spans it at the village of Hortobágy. In the past, the river was known for its extensive flooding that irrigated the vast alkaline steppes. Today, its course is largely regulated, but it remains the most important water source for livestock, Hungarian Grey Cattle, Racka sheep, and horses, grazing on the steppe. The reed beds along its banks are a vital sanctuary for numerous protected bird species.
