Kaba is a town in Hajdú-Bihar County, eastern Hungary, world-renowned in scientific circles due to a significant meteorite fall in 1857. On April 15, 1857, a carbonaceous chondrite meteorite struck the outskirts of the town; it became a cornerstone of astrochemistry as it was the first celestial body in which organic compounds were scientifically identified. For much of the 20th century, Kaba's economic life was synonymous with the sugar industry, hosting one of Hungary's most technologically advanced sugar refineries until its closure in 2006. Today, the town has successfully pivoted toward agriculture and wellness tourism, centered around its local thermal spa. The spa's alkaline waters are highly valued for treating rheumatic conditions and promoting general recovery. Geographically positioned in the Hajdúság region on the main transport axis between Budapest and Debrecen, Kaba serves as a vital agricultural hub. Architectural highlights include the historic Reformed Church and various monuments dedicated to the 1857 meteorite, which remains the town's primary claim to fame. The community actively preserves its Hajdú heritage while investing in sustainable development and local services for the surrounding farming region.
