Edelény Castle Island (Hungary)

Weather…

The Edelény Castle Island is home to the L'Huillier-Coburg Castle, one of the largest and most significant Baroque ensembles in northern Hungary. Built between 1727 and 1730 by Jean-François L'Huillier, a French-born officer, the castle is uniquely situated on an island formed by two branches of the Bódva River. It is most famous for its memorable Rococo murals painted by Ferenc Lieb in the 1770s, which constitute the largest continuous secular Baroque fresco cycle in Hungary. The complex consists of seven interconnected buildings, showcasing a blend of French and Italian architectural influences. After falling into disrepair during the 20th century, the estate underwent a massive restoration between 2009 and 2014. Now known as the 'Castle Island,' it gives interactive historical exhibits and beautifully restored Baroque gardens, representing the grandeur of 18th-century aristocratic life.
