Edelény is a historic town located in the Bódva River valley in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, home to one of Hungary's most magnificent Baroque landmarks, the L'Huillier-Coburg Palace. Constructed between 1716 and 1730 by Baron Jean-François L'Huillier, this monumental palace is world-renowned for its exceptional rococo fresco cycle painted by Ferenc Lieb, which adorns seven main rooms with vivid depictions of 18th-century noble life and mythological themes. The palace stands on a unique island formed by the branches of the Bódva River and is surrounded by a sprawling English landscape garden. Beyond the palace, the area has significant archaeological importance, evidenced by the Borsod earthworks, a major administrative center during the early medieval Hungarian state. In the 20th century, Edelény was a significant coal mining hub, but following the closure of the mines, the town shifted its focus toward cultural tourism and the preservation of its heritage. Today, it serves as a regional educational and cultural center and a strategic gateway to the Aggtelek Karst caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its blend of aristocratic grandeur, industrial history, and natural beauty, Edelény remains a key destination in Northern Hungary.
