Diosgyor Castle
Diósgyőr Castle, located on the outskirts of Miskolc, is one of Hungary's most significant medieval monuments, famously known as the 'Castle of the Queens.' It reached its zenith in the 14th century during the reign of King Louis the Great, who expanded it into a magnificent Gothic fortress with four massive corner towers. For centuries, the castle was the traditional wedding gift for Hungarian queens, serving as their primary country residence. A pivotal moment in European diplomacy occurred here in 1381 with the signing of the Peace of Turin with Venice. Following the Ottoman era, the castle fell into decay until a major 21st-century reconstruction project aimed to restore its medieval grandeur. Today, it stands as a 'living castle' where visitors can explore fully restored halls, including the Great Knight's Hall and the Queen's chambers. With costumed guides, interactive exhibits, and regular knightly tournaments, the castle provides an authentic glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the medieval royal court and the history of the Anjou dynasty in Hungary.
