Boldogko Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Boldogkő Castle is one of the most easy on the eye fortifications in Northern Hungary, perched atop a narrow volcanic ridge in the Zemplén Mountains. Built in the late 13th century following the Mongol invasion, the castle served as a critical defensive bastion protecting the trade routes toward Poland. Its most iconic feature is the 'Lion's Rock,' accessible via a narrow wooden walkway along a razor-sharp rock spine, providing panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. Throughout its long history, the castle was held by prominent noble families such as the Drugeths and Bebeks, and it even hosted the famous Hungarian poet Bálint Balassi. Recent extensive restorations have preserved its medieval character, allowing visitors to explore the grand knight's hall, the armory, and a unique lead soldier exhibition that recreates the Battle of Muhi with thousands of figures. The castle regularly hosts medieval festivals, knightly tournaments, and historical reenactments, making it a living monument that bridges the gap between the Middle Ages and the present day.
