Fuzer Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Füzer Castle is one of Hungary's most dramatically situated fortresses, perched on a steep volcanic plug in the northern Zemplén Mountains. Believed to have been built before the 1241 Mongol invasion by the Aba clan, it is recognized as one of the country's earliest private stone castles. Its most significant historical role occurred in 1526, following the disastrous Battle of Mohács, when crown guardian Péter Perényi brought the Holy Crown of Hungary to Füzér, keeping it hidden here for a year to protect it from Ottoman forces. After centuries of ruin, the castle underwent a spectacular 'living castle' reconstruction in the 2010s, restoring the upper and lower wards, the palace, and the magnificent Gothic chapel. Today, it serves as an immersive museum where interactive exhibits detail medieval aristocratic life, period cooking, and the legendary story of the crown's protection. The castle hill is not only a historical monument but also a protected natural site, offering unparalleled views across the Hegyköz region and into Slovakia.
