The Hernad River is the most important tributary of the Sajo, originating at the base of the Kralova hola mountain in the Low Tatras of Slovakia. Stretching over a total length of 286 kilometers, with 118 kilometers flowing through Hungarian territory, the river carves through the diverse landscapes of the Gomor-Torna Karst and the Zemplen Mountains. Its upper course is famous for the Hernad Canyon within the Slovak Paradise National Park, a spectacular gorge featuring vertical rock walls. Upon entering Hungary, the river meanders through a broader valley before joining the Sajo near Onod.
